INTERPRETATION OF GUINEA BISSAU

A little nation in West Africa on the Atlantic coast that gained independence from Portugal in 1974 but was not heavily influenced by them and its main religion is Islam (60%) and African traditional tribal animism practices(30%). It is one of the poorest nations of the world, plagued by civil unrest.

One of the main tribes is the Mandinka, made famous though Alex Haley’s “Roots” and it is estimated that more than a quarter of American slaves came from this people group who now are spread across the globe in an estimated 11 million strong.

Its flag was adopted from the Ghana flag with the same color meanings
